Why go to Mirissa
Mirissa is a small fishing town with a wide, curved beach on the south coast. It is the main base for blue whale watching in Sri Lanka, and in season it is one of the most social and easy-going beach towns on the island.
How many days
Two nights is enough for a whale watching trip and a beach day. Three or four nights gives you time to visit nearby beaches, surf in Weligama or simply rest at the end of a busy trip.
Best time to visit
December to April is the season: calm seas, sunny days and whales. May to October brings the southwest monsoon, big waves and many closed beach bars. If you are travelling in those months, the east coast is usually the better beach choice.
Getting there
- From Galle: about 45 minutes by car or tuk tuk.
- From Colombo or the airport: about 3 to 3.5 hours on the Southern Expressway.
- By train: the coastal line stops at Weligama and Matara, a short tuk tuk ride away.
TODO: verifytimetable. - From Ella or Yala: about 3.5 to 4 hours by car.
Top things to do
- Whale watching. Boats leave early in the morning and trips usually last 4 to 6 hours. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance and does not chase whales. Prices:
TODO: verify. - Coconut Tree Hill for the classic photo, at sunrise or sunset to avoid crowds.
- Secret Beach, a small cove a short walk or tuk tuk away.
- Parrot Rock at the end of the main beach, reachable at low tide.
- Learn to surf in Weligama, 15 minutes away, with gentle beginner waves.
- Stilt fishermen at Koggala and Ahangama. Many are now posing for tips, so agree before taking photos.
- Turtle watching in the sea at nearby beaches, without touching or feeding them.
Where to stay
- On the main beach: fall out of bed into the sea, more noise at night.
- On the hill behind the bay: quieter, with views, a short walk down.
- Weligama or Midigama: for surfers and longer stays.
Local food to try
Mirissa’s beach restaurants lay out the catch of the day on ice in the evening. Pick your fish and have it grilled. Also try devilled prawns, coconut roti and curd with kithul treacle for dessert.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking the cheapest whale tour. Crowded boats and bad practices are common. Ask about group size, safety gear and how close they approach whales.
- Taking seasickness for granted. The sea can be rough even in season. Take medication before you board.
- Swimming where the locals do not. Rip currents are real on the south coast.
- Visiting in June and expecting postcard weather. Check the season.
