Why go
Sigiriya and Dambulla sit in the middle of the Cultural Triangle, the dry zone between Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. This is where you find the island’s ancient kingdoms, and it is the best base for seeing them.
Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is a 5th-century rock fortress rising straight out of the jungle, with frescoes, water gardens and the remains of a palace on top. Dambulla has a cave temple complex filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings. Add elephant safaris and village life, and it is one of the most rewarding parts of the country.
How many days
Two nights is the minimum. Three nights lets you add Polonnaruwa or an elephant safari without rushing. If you also want Anuradhapura, use Sigiriya as a base and add a fourth night, or stay one night in Anuradhapura.
Best time to visit
The Cultural Triangle is in the dry zone, so it is visitable most of the year. January to September is generally the driest. October to December brings the northeast monsoon rains. The big elephant gathering at Minneriya usually happens in the dry months, roughly July to October. TODO: verify for the current season.
Getting there
- From Colombo or the airport: about 4 to 5 hours by car.
- From Kandy: about 2.5 hours by car.
- By bus: possible via Dambulla, which is the transport hub, but slow and crowded with luggage.
- There is no train station at Sigiriya. The nearest useful stations (such as Habarana) need onward road transport.
Top things to do
- Climb Sigiriya Rock. Start when it opens to beat the heat. Foreigner entry fee:
TODO: verify. - Climb Pidurangala at sunrise. A shorter, rougher climb with a final scramble over boulders, and the best view of Lion Rock.
- Dambulla Cave Temple. Five caves full of statues and murals. Dress modestly and remove your shoes. Entry fee:
TODO: verify. - Elephant safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, usually in the afternoon.
- Day trip to Polonnaruwa by car or bicycle around the ruins.
- Village tour. Bullock cart, lake canoe and a home-cooked lunch. Touristy, but the food is often excellent.
- Ritigala forest monastery ruins, for something quieter.
Where to stay
- Sigiriya village: closest to the rock, good guesthouses and jungle lodges.
- Habarana: a crossroads town with larger hotels, convenient for safaris and Polonnaruwa.
- Dambulla: practical, with more shops and transport, less atmosphere.
- Around Kandalama: resort hotels by the reservoir.
Local food to try
Look for village-style rice and curry cooked over a wood fire, curd and treacle (buffalo yogurt with kithul palm syrup), kurakkan roti made from finger millet and fresh wood apple juice.
Mistakes to avoid
- Climbing Sigiriya at midday. The rock reflects heat and there is little shade.
- Booking a safari to the wrong park. Elephants move between parks with the seasons. Ask your driver or guide where they are this week.
- Trying to see Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and a safari in one day. It is possible on paper and miserable in practice.
- Forgetting socks for temples. Stone floors get very hot in the afternoon.
